Post New guy from O'Fallon
Hello, name's Tom. I'm into anything with wheels, been around hotrods/streetrods my whole life. My dad built a '47 Ford, a '32 Chevy and a few years ago we built a Cobra replica together. He also has a very clean '65 Bug (around 50K original miles). I've had a few motorcycles, and did the Fast and the Furious scene for a while with my '97 Mitsubishi Eclipse. I wanted something a bit simpler to work on and that has a bit more character, so I picked up a '60 bug (titled as a '59) a few months ago with the intention of turning it into a volksrod. Here are a few pics

No offense taken. That seems to be the general consensus. I know I could buy a rusted out bug for cheap to work on, but I've got too many projects and 2 little kids at home, so my time is limited. If it makes you feel any better, nothing on the car is original, a lot of it isn't correct for the year.

Thanks Cody!

widehatch,
I appreciate your concern. It does look nice, but part of the reason for that is my other interest, photography. There are some spots that have rusted through and a lot of areas have been patched, the wiring is a mess, headliner is in bad shape, there is a lot of bondo, for an aircooled car it leaks more fluid than anything I've ever owned, and the paint is not great. I agree with you though, I would hate to see a really nice old bug cut up. I know the volksrod motto is "pissing off purists since day one", but that is not my intention. I've been looking for the perfect bug for over a year now. I have turned down buying other bugs that were in better condition for about the same amount of money because I couldn't bring myself to cut it up. My requirements were something that I could drive the day I bought but that needed some work, something not original but solid, nothing too rare such as an oval or split or a '67 for that matter. I also wanted to be able to do anything I was going to do to the car in half of a 2 car garage. Anything I remove from the car will hopefully be usable to someone trying to bring another old bug back to life...like nucks!

nucks,
I'll keep that in mind.

 Tom. Sorry if I came on a little strong. I wrote that just coming off a 14 hour work day. I'm by no means a purist since I drive a lowered split bus. Sorry if my first impression was that of a dick.

Welcome Tom. Great meeting you the other night.
Nice 59/60 bug you have there...and with the hot rod heritage in your family I'm sure this volksrod will turn out sweet.
Those pictures really look great of your bug...I likey.
To all the guys cringing out there...this bug has had several rusted areas patched over, the nose has been hit pretty hard and I saw rivits in the pan so it's really not a pristine carcass anyway.
I too would suggest finding a lost baja project to start with instead of chopping this one but...I've also been known to cut up perfectly good bugs to make buggies and even merged two buses into one
Either way...welcome to the aircooled VW world and let me know if you need anything as I live just down the street from you.

Roy
