Post Buses Nowhere Near The Arch #31 - Labor Day weekend 2016
Well, here we go again! I can't believe I've organized 31 of these VW camping weekends for you folks! Hey! Check out the fresh, new website that Kathryn built for us at: http://www.bnnta.com

"Buses Nowhere Near The Arch #31" - B.N.N.T.A #31

Formerly, and also known as "Buses By The Arch". A family-oriented VW camping weekend!

Friday, Sept 2nd thru Sep 5th, 2016 (The entire Labor Day weekend!)

It's time again to make plans to attend the premier Midwest VW Type 2 camping event! On average, we are delighted to host roughly about 100 Buses. (Check out past event coverage in the July, 2011 issue of "Hot VWs Magazine".)

Come join us for the upcoming "Buses Nowhere Near the Arch" camping weekend. This family camping event will feature a gathering of VW Transporters of all types and eras from all over the USA. While predominantly a Type 2 event, any and all models of VW are welcome to camp with us! We are looking forward to seeing you and your Volkswagen amidst all the "Split-windshields", "Bubble-windshields", Vanagons, and EuroVans as well as any other VW types this Fall. All models and years of VWs are invited, and only VWs are allowed inside the BNNTA event campground.

"Buses Nowhere Near The Arch #31" will be held rain or shine over the long Labor Day holiday weekend, Friday, Sept 2nd thru Sep 5th, 2016. We will gather again at the group use campgrounds at Indian Creek Recreation Area. This U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campground is located on the 18,000 acre Mark Twain Lake, about 30 miles southwest of historic Hannibal, Missouri. This is a beautiful, federally-run and maintained campground with paved roads and pads and nice facilities. Most conveniences are available in nearby Monroe City or Hannibal.

On both Friday and Saturday evening we plan to have campfires and music along with VW and other "unusual" door prizes, and parts swapping in addition to the "site-to-site" socializing "Bus-banter" that this VW camping event is famous for. On Saturday morning we are planning another of our famous "Bus caravans" over to historic Hannibal, the boyhood home of Samuel Clemens, a.k.a. "Mark Twain." You'll have lots of time to explore the haunts of his hometown, or perhaps tour "Injun Joe's cave." You won't want to miss it!

On Saturday afternoon, a informal pot luck dinner is held, with bar-b-que pork being served up while it lasts. If you plan to join us, please bring a large dish of your favorite specialty to share at this communal diner and gathering. Later on Saturday evening, owners choice awards will be presented in several Type 2 classes in addition to vendor and participant-donated VW-related door prizes. If you have a neat VW item to donate, please bring it along. On Sunday you are free to enjoy the lake or visit other regional highlights. It should prove to be a relaxed, fun weekend full of great Volkswagen experiences and new friendships.

Our private camping facilities at Indian Creek include our own large, private "Buses Nowhere Near the Arch" group area with some electric hook-ups (first come, first served), fishing, water-sports (bring your water toys), playground, huge pavillion, toilet and shower facilities, and a nearby boat ramp. The all inclusive camping/event fee is $30 per VW for the entire weekend.

Only VW’s that are registered and camping will be admitted into the BNNTA group campground area! Now, please read that last sentence again!

Campsites in the BNNTA group area cannot be reserved in advance. The gates to our campground will be open for arrivals and site selection by about noon on Friday. If you arrive earlier, you could stay nearby in the regular Indian Creek public campground at their daily rate. Although there should be plenty of room for all, the earlier you arrive the better.

We are looking forward to your arrival for a holiday weekend full of Volkswagen fun. Please pass the word around to your VW friends about this Volkswagen camping festival held over the long Labor Day holiday weekend!

Wipe down and pack up those Transporters for the cruise to Mark Twain Lake for the "Buses Nowhere Near The Arch #31" campout on Friday, Sept 2nd thru Monday Sept 5th, 2016 near Hannibal, Missouri. Please see the newly updated (yeah, I know, finally!) website below for a link to a mapping program to find your way to BNNTA.

"Buses Nowhere Near the Arch #31"
Indian Creek Recreation Area, "group campground", Mark Twain Lake, MO

Directions:

From Monroe City, MO:
Take US Route 24 southwest approx. 6.5 miles.
Turn left (south) onto State Route "HH", (WATCH FOR "BNNTA" SIGNS)
Proceed almost 1.75 miles, turn left onto first paved road. Monroe County Road #581. There is an "Indian Creek Marina" billboard and "BNNTA" event signs at this turn, then proceed a little over 3.5 miles into the "Indian Creek Recreational Area" and watch for signs on the right for the "Group Use Area"; then follow the "BNNTA" signs into the "Group Use Area".

Welcome to "Buses Nowhere Near the Arch"! We look forward to seeing you there!

Hi all,

I just got off the phone with the US Army Corps of Engineers Rangers up at Mark Twain Lake and all is in order for the upcoming BNNTA Camping weekend. They are excited and looking forward to the first arrivals of Buses and other VWs at the Lake for the long Labor Day weekend. We're busy getting the graphics (thanks again to Tom Janisewski!) settled for this years event, and then we can go ahead and order the trophies and dash plaques as well a the limited run of event t-shirts with the new artwork.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone again in about a month from now!

Mark your calendars and get your VWs ready. Check out the new website that Kathryn made up with photos for the Buses Nowhere Near the Arch events at: www.bnnta.com

See you all soon!

Bill

Updated site looks good. Pretty sure all those pics aren't from last year. I think I'm in one and it looks like it was several years ago, as my ex-wife is standing next to me and we haven't been together since 2010.

There's 2 set of pics.. one set if you just click on "Event Photos" and another if you point to "event Photos" and then wait for "2015 photos" to pop out to the side.

Bill, I just noticed this paragraph.

"Campsites in the BNNTA group area cannot be reserved in advance. The gates to our campground will be open for arrivals and site selection by about noon on Friday. If you arrive earlier, you could stay nearby in the regular Indian Creek public campground at their daily rate. Although there should be plenty of room for all, the earlier you arrive the better."

Is early arrival to the regular area not an option anymore? Like Thursday afternoon/evening? Are the gates actually closed until noon on Friday?

So situation normal. Tossing around the idea of heading up Thursday evening by myself and let the rest of the family come on Friday. An extra night of camping on alone would be nice.

Howdy all!

Just landed from a three day "see North America adventure" for AA. Four flights over a fourteen hour on-duty period duty in the same MD-80 aircraft all day! Today I feel like a freight train rolled over me! Back home for a few days off, whew!

Yes, I only lease the entire "group" campground from noon on Friday until noon on Monday for our BNNTA event. Hence the fact that I only mention the gates opening at noon on Friday (I never know if they are going to extend the early opening from year to year). The USACE Rangers in recent years have been offering to me to open the gates earlier for any early arrivals under the following condition! If you arrive on Thursday and want to go in and stay Thursday evening then :!: YOU :!: , not the BNNTA event, YOU must pay the normal daily campsite fee charged in the main campground for a campsite. YOU need to scoot over to the entrance booth at the main campground and tell them you will be camping in the "group" campground on Thusday evening and that you are there to pay your nightly campsite fee.

Please, please, please DO NOT EXPECT THAT THE RANGERS WILL COME AND COLLECT THE FEE! That is not their job. They will pass through the campground occasionally on their appointed rounds and will know how many VWs are staying early. They mention it to me and if someone "cheaps out" and fails to pay, I feel responsible to pay to keep them happy. Please don't make me responsible for your early arrival fees. They like us and this is a privilege that they have been extending lately. They are doing you "early arrival folks" a favor, don't mess this up for us! If it keeps happening, at the very least I will ask them not to open the gates until Friday at noon. Also, we setup our event headquarters and reservation area in sites 11, 12 and 13, so if you are there early, please leave those sites empty and advise others "not in the know" of that please. We're delighted to offer this privilege, thanks for helping us out with your simple compliance!

On another note, the BNNTA event t-shirts have been ordered, and so have the event awards, dash plaques, etc. Around the Bowman household, we'll soon have registration packet materials scattered all over the place as we get your packets ready for the event. Then we'll be loading lots of event stuff into two or three of our old VW Buses for the Labor Day Friday morning trip up to the BNNTA location on Mark Twain Lake. We are getting excited to be seeing many of you again soon at the Lake for some VW camping fun!

Bill Bowman

p.s. Last September (BNNTA#30) according to the info on the turned-in registration forms, the "oldest Transporter at BNNTA #30 award" was won by my '59 Double-Cab. But I understand that perhaps someone else there may have had an older Bus in attendance. I want to get the award to any older Transporter that was registered/attended the Sept 2015 event, so if you or someone you know has that Bus, get in touch with me so I can get the "oldest Transporter at BNNTA #30" award to you!
