Post Running Rich..... Again
Hope everyone is doing well! I haven't been around because my car hates me right now. I'm coming here to beg for some wisdom/advice. I've had it up to here (motions hand to forehead) with my issues of burning rich. Fought with it all last year and finally got it to a point where it was manageable (pretty sure it was after I adjusted the choke).

The car ran decently, not great, all winter with the exception of some times when it was hard to start. I've had the car about a year now, so I'm going to still pull the VW newb card and ask a couple dumb questions. I appreciate any of your guys wisdom and feedback. Someone slap me.

1. Am I at the point where I need a new (rebuilt) carb? Last time I took the carb top off, the seals/gaskets looked pretty busted up. This is a "throw the baby out with the bathwater" approach, but I'm okay with that. I want this problem to go away so I can enjoy my baby.
2. Last time I was at Archway, the guy said it was an incorrect carb for this car (picture attached). If that is the case, should I go with something different?
3. I was looking at the possibility of going with an electronic distributor. Both so I can take away a bit of the maintenence and also so I can keep my daily driver starting all year around. Is that a bad idea, good idea?
4. While I'm in there, I thought about replacing the fuel pump. I've been told it looked a bit juicy below the pump and could be a sign that it needs replacing.
5. Should I just take it into Archway and let them do it? I was pretty hands on last year, and don't mind doing the work, but feel like I might need a real doctors help here.

I'm actually super bummed. My ride is just sitting in the garage. Pretty sure she hates me.

Also when I say it's running rich, this is a different kind of rich from last year. This is rich as in, I-can't-really-drive-the-car rich. I wanted to add that in there in case that helps.

David, mucha gracias kind sir. I think that's what I'll do.

I'm guessing just go with an EMPI? Looks like they are around $140. Heck, if I would have known that I probably would have switched it awhile ago. I always thought carbs were wicked expensive.

I'd go looking for a good used one before I ever spent money on a Chinese repro carb.

i Also hate the chinese, as much as the next bloke, but i couldn't find Any decent rebuilt 34-PICT-3 that
still had any kind of proper throttle shaft bushing seals  so, i did buy 1 of those EMPI chinese carbs ,,,
believe it or don't, it only took a couple of turns on the idle screw + a 1/2 turn on the mixture screw,
and that basterd has been running in the wife's old bug / daughter's 'new' 74 bug, & knock-on-wood,
with not so much as a single stumble
more to follow as the new longblock gets broken in 8)

I think I'd probably just get an OG unit re-bushed, even if it cost more.

Because fuck the Chinese knock-offs, that's why.

Being the newb that I am, I didn't know the EMPI was crap - in fact, I assumed it would be decent as it seems like every part out there is EMPI branded. The more you know.

I called Archway this morning (waiting for a return call) so we will see what they have.

Once upon a time EMPI was *the* shit to have. Now it's just Chinese knock-off crap. If it's what you can get, it's what you can get. But I'd still recommend the real deal over it.

i got 4 or 5 'real-deal' Solex's, plus assorted Brocar's, Brosols, etc., & not a single 1 of 'em still has a set of decent throttle shaft bushings
i wish we had a decent shop in OK that still did the re-bush work, then i'd have every single 1 of 'em re-done ,,, but, STL is a ways from Tulsa
mebbe a side trip is in order, during next BNNTA !??!?!

I can't think of any good reason why Archway shouldn't be able to re-bush a Solex. They've got a full machine shop, right? What's the big deal?

I agree with Brian, don't waste your money on a junk Empi.

http://volkzbitz.com/

This guy rebushings and replates Solex carbs. Does a great job and is reasonable. He just did a 34PICT for the bus for me. I sent him a bunch of carb cores for trade on the work. Total was like $80 after the trade on the carbs.
