Post 1969 Westy refreshing
What's up everybody? This is my other project going on right now. I picked up this 1969 westy this past August. I was looking for a low light and good ole Ted forwarded me the craigslist add. Apparently this was Lesters "that worked at archway here in stl" old bus. It has a aluminum block and some other fancy? upgrades. Took it to Benton Park, UCBC show, and Bay Creek campout. It ran good with a few fuel filter changes. Finally it started cutting out on a regular. I have pulled the engine and trans for a cleaning and refresh. While it is all out I am gonna get the shift linkage up to date too.

A few more pictures of the tear down. The tank was a little dirty. I changed the sock filter that goes in the fuel tank when I got it and has about 500 miles on it in the picture.

So far I have cleaned it, installed a new canvas top, got the correct 14" rims "thanks D pitch" and general grabbers on it. .

Congrats on the new-to-you Campmobile! Westies are the BEST!

Man, don't clean that filter, throw it in the trash can. Order a couple of new ones from WW along with the proper gaskets (cheap). While out, put a length of chain into that tank through the neck and shake the shit out of it to get the chain to knock the rust scale inside loose, rinse it out a bunch, then install the filter and fuel outlet before trying to use it again. Better yet, pay a radiator shop to "boil it out" and coat the interior to rid yourself of the debris in there from clogging up your filter and getting into the carb and jets. Install new rubber brake lines and flush the brake fluid too!

Great score! Hope to camp with you someday soon! BNNTA?

Bill

I went ahead and found a good used tank from Toms imports in Columbia Mo. Daniels good pal Tom had one left and my dad was in town that day to grab it. I will be picking it up this weekend. As you can imagine that old tanks had seen better days. I am getting a nice lists of parts to order from WW hope to have it back together for some camping trips before BNNTA. We are planning the AIr Cooled Antiques show in Oskaloosa Iowa April. 30 2016.

Damn no wonder it was chugging. Clean new tank will do wonders. Get that shit back together and come winter camping down here in the Ozarks with us for Super Bowl weekend 2/5-6. You have 1 month.

Smart move on the replacement tank. It looks like there is a bunch of patchwork repairs on he bottom. Only a matter of time for more problems there. The PO of my 74 told me that the gas gauge never worked right. When I pulled the tank there was a red shop towel that was hanging on the float!

'bout to get that thing back together? Would be a good idea to re-torque the heads and case halves while you have it down to a log block, if you didn't already plan on it. Thinking I'll pull my engine out this spring and do that, it's been in there since summer 2013 when it was built.

Well not really. I have been cleaning and painting tins. Doing what I can in the basement. Sucks not having a shop I know that.

Removed the shift linkage today after work. Was told by Thorbus aka DLX it is a quick shift kit. Gonna clean this up and see what I need to replace. Tried to take advantage of the 50 degree weather.

Been slowly knocking some stuff out. Torqued the heads and put the engine back together, new brake lines in, waiting for some boots for the shift linkage, working on CVs now. Planing on having all the parts and everything ready so when it warms up a bit slap it together. Chompin at the bit to get this back on the road.

I got most of it out back together. I have some popping out the carb. Trouble shooting that and hope to be cruising soon.

Got the bus back together. Have a little fan shroud wining. The shifting still a little tricky. At least it is moving.
