Post Judson project
Bought a Judson at the Tulsa show. Unit was fairly complete and spun freely. After disassembly and honing I decided it could easily be re-built. Parts order was submitted and after some cleaning and painting I have it ready to be installed on the Ghia.

Nice! Here's a picture of mine. Is yours a 40 horse? One problem I ran into was getting the throttle linkage to work right. I found that my throttle cable was an inch shorter than it should have been. Once I replaced that with one of the correct length, everything was fine.

Yes, 40 hp. I will keep the throttle cable length in mind if I have issues with fitment! You have two magnetos!? Tried one yet? Dave

I haven't tried the magnetos. Not sure if I like the way they look in the engine compartment, it's getting busy in there, and that "coil" is big. I will try them though. Your Ghia has more room than a Bug, so one might not look so cluttered on it.

It's suppose to double the horsepower.... Lots of old magazine articles on them, like Road & Track, etc. Some of those gave horsepower figures.

Everything I've heard from modern-day installs is that you will certainly see some power increase, but don't expect "double" the horsepower. Keep your expectations reasonable and you'll be pretty happy with the Judson. While you have it apart, check for internal cracks in the outer housing inner bore near the outlet holes. Apparently it is very important to setup the unit properly for the coolest running. Carb jetting is important. Did you order your parts from Alejandro in Belgium? Did you get a new jet and how about a stronger fuel pump spring?

I have had a complete used 36hp Judson Supercharger kit (including a Judson "magneto"/coil) stored away for use someday. They are pretty cool! No plan for it's use yet.

I can't wait to see what you think of your Judson install!

Bill

Most information I have found says 30-50% increase. Not going to expect huge changes, but anything will be an improvement! Housing was in very nice condition, no cracks or grooves and it honed out nicely. I got all my parts from George Folchi in Connecticut. He has proven to be a very good source of information and encouraged me to do the re-build myself. Hope to make some progress on the install after the holidays. Need to see what sort of clearance issues I will run into since I have a 12 volt alternator instead of 6 volt generator. Have found a couple of links to show one mounted on alternator cars. Thanks for the interest. Dave

Found this advertisement. Numbers would be based on stock engine and I have a big-bore kit on mine which I am expecting to limit the power increase slightly. Dave

I'm sure you already know of this site, but if you don't, here it is.

Also I noticed the add you posted says lubrication is ordinary motor oil. I've always heard that Marvel Mystery Oil is what to use, and it's what I use.

Not sure how 50% increase is double, those calcuations don't sound right.

Several folks I know describe the boost in power brought on by the installation of a Judson supercharger as turning a 36hp vintage engine into roughly the power of a healthy 1500-1600 motor.

Cool vintage performance upgrade with a nice power benefit.

Ok mister math expert. I said it's "suppose" to double the horse power, I never said it did. Read the old articles and you will get all kinds of different HP ratings, and opinions. Who cares? It's cool. Yes it brings the old 36 horse up to about a good running 1500 or so.
