Post FINALLY got me a Thing!
Well, after who-knows how long of searching, lost deals and dud candidates, I've finally found a '73 Thing that I can call my own!

Flew up to Milwaukee WI Saturday morning where I was met by Chris Walsh in his 61 dbl-dr panel and driven about an hour north to Jim Eliis's place "Turtle Springs Farm". From there Jim drove me the next couple of mile over to Steve Paukner's homestead in rural Wisconsin. Steve is a VW guy and has been to BNNTA a couple of times.

Anyway, he's a VW mechanic and builds mostly dune buggy and race engines. The Thing was used mainly for parades and entertainng kids/ grandkids.

It's a survivor... OG paint, engine and trans. There's a bit of a crunch in the front driver's side corner but it ain't bad. Some rot in the rocker below the passenger side rear door, and a crusty battery pan. That's about it.

Seats are OG with the original covers but the padding is all but gone. OG swiss-cheese floor mats.

Gas heater is all there but not working - fuel pump and "T" removed.

Top is a replacement we couldn't figure out. It's serviceable but not as sturdy as TS repros I've seen. Side curtains we thing are original, and i have 2 sets.

OG wheels but they've been rattle-canned silver.

After making the deal, I drove the 460-some miles home straight through, 10 hours it took! and about 6 of those were through a hoorendous thunderstorms that had water blasting in on me from every crack and orifice in the car. I was SOAKING WET by the time I rolled home, at 2AM.

Also, just after I crossed over the Mississippi, the genny light came on solid. I pulled over to see if it was the belt but it was OK. I drove the last 15 miles on battery power.

Today I tried some troubleshooting and swapped my voltage regulator from the bus to the Thing... Genny light still on with the good bus unit in there.. :x .. but get this... the Generator light is now also on in the bus with the Thing regulator... so, WTF?

We'll have to return to that another time..

Now, PICTURES!!

No worries mate. I knew it would be hard to let go of once you got down there. I see you took whole damned top off entirely! ... Out here the damned thing is STILL drying out from my drive home.

But, things probably worked out for the better - I had planned to fly to Phoenix and drive home in 3 500-mile/day sessions. After having driven one just over 400 miles I was DONE.. and there's no way in hell I could have repeated that for 2 more day in a row! I was in AGONY by the time I got home. (of course being soaking wet didn't help either).

I don't know what it is about those ghia style pans but it's nowhere near as comfortable in the legroom area as a Bug.

Already checked with Rick Babor about putting in a new battery tray, then I'll probably POR-15 and Chassis-Black the whole pan top & bottom. They're really in remarkable shape, but I know that won't last long in St. Louis if I don't cover it up.

Need seat padding too. hooboy! nothing like a 400-some mile trip with raw springs diggin up your arse!
