Post BulliBill's 1959 Double-Cab restoration...
Hi all,

After about three months in the body shop for a slow but steady body work/restoration, the dis-assembled shell of my '59 Double-Cab was finally painted on Friday afternoon. Here is a link to a theSamba.com "what did you do for your Bus today" thread (page 507, towards the bottom).

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewto ... tart=10120

All of the other removed parts including the cab doors, (both) deck lids, the side and rear gates, bumpers and logo, etc., etc. should be painted on Monday, then everything wet sanded and buffed out in the weeks to come...

Jeff Burke, the very same talented guy who painted Roy's 21 window Deluxe, worked his magic to straighten out the old metal (along with Roys earlier and awesome metal work). Jeff now works in conjunction with "The Car Guy, LLC" owned by Brett Nelson out in their shop in O'Fallon, MO. After all the metal prep, Jeff laid down at least five coats of various types of primers (block sanding between each). Then yesterday in a nearby awesome $120,000 downdraft paint booth at Mudd Auto Body, Jeff squirted several coats of single-stage Dupont polyurethane L31 Dove Blue paint (color-matched to original factory paint deep inside my Bus). In addition to the exterior, he shot way back under the the bed where the gas tank is located, the entire front and rear seat interior areas, the wheel wells, and the entire engine compartment.

Jeff looked like a "Smurf" when he exited the paint booth!

Enjoy the photos to follow, I'm exhausted and heading to bed...

Looks fantastic Bill!

So Effingham is right around the corner. I'm in for a hand on reassembly any time you need it.

I dug through my archives for a before pic. Found only one.

That certainly is the ugly ass end of mine a long while back! Thanks to some talented friends, it looks a lot different now (see above)! Thanks for the offer! Since I'll start flying again in early March, I'll have a lot less time to work on it between flight assignments, so I'm not even sure It'll be finished this year... BNNTA is about as optimistic as I am, and I'm even doubting that target... I can't wait to see it again on Monday!

Tuesdays at Bills :) You've already got the seats done...shit what else it there besides mounting some lights, gauges and some wood slats besides the tranny and engine?
Looking great Bill, glad Jeff has done another great job on a VW. I think the micros could keep him busy for the next couple of years.

Thanks Roy, I wish the re-assembly process was that simple. I do hope a few of the Micros step up and keep Jeff busy. I plan to have him do a little work on the '59 Double-Door Panel, and eventually have him restore and paint the '57 Oval Kabriolett.

He is not cheap, and if anyone out there is focused on cheap, then they should just go to Maaco and you'll get what you pay for. He is extremely thorough, and proud of the quality of his work. He can really straighten out metal!!! If you want quality, he's the guy! I think both Roy and I would say that Jeff is an excellent value as a painter. Awesome matal-finishing and paint work. Once he does his thing on your VW, if you are careful with your baby, his work should last the rest of your life.

We can have it done by BNNTA. No problem. Looks awsome.
