Roy and Chad in two Buses should have left Phoenix, AZ at about 4pm to head East to return to Missouri and attend the BNNTA event and visit his family here in St. Louis. I hope he will post their driving adventures here on his build thread, or perhaps start a new thread about the road trip? I think Roy has a freshly rebuilt engine in his beautiful '65 21 window Deluxe. Take it easy on the way Roy, we're looking forward to seeing you guys/gals cruise into the BNNTA campground on Friday...

Here is a shot of the nose of Roys beautiful Deluxe with the Jerome Jamboree campsite on a mountainside in the background. Thanks again Roy and Shawn for a great weekend out in Arizona with old VWs!

Time for some updates...
Built a new 2110cc engine for the bus. Pretty much bought all new CB Performance parts starting with an aluminum bubble top case. Came up with an idea of using a set of hollow punches from harbor freight to make some hi temp silicone washers to fit around the head studs in the valve cover and a little hi temp RTV under the washers in attempt to prevent one of the most annoying oil leaks every Type-1 engine has and it has worked perfectly for the last 4000-miles with no leakies.

Two weeks before my road trip back to Missouri I had the engine in and running but the oil temps were warm so I added a Mesa 72 pass oil cooler and electric fan...after all...I do live in Mesa, AZ now. Put about 500 miles on the fresh engine with a scenic trip down south to Tombstone and Bisbee the weekend before BNNTA. No issues the entire 1400 mile trip back to MO other than murdering about a zillion flying grasshoppers in New Mexico and a faulty hi/lo beam switch that would leave me in the dark a couple times between switching. Had a great time with many of you at BNNTA.

On my way back I decided to drive through Colorado and Utah and visit my daughter and grandson for his first birthday in Las Vegas .

Made it home safely after a 3651-mile road trip in a 49 year old bus.
Two weeks later Bill and Shawn flew in to visit me and attempt to win the Jerome Jamboree raffle bus. Bill was elected to pilot the restored 66 Sundial leading the 35+ VW caravan up Mt Mingus and into the historic mining town of Jerome , AZ. Shawn was the lucky guy who got to drive the clubs garbage scowl a 69 single cab named Sky King up to the show. But not before doing some last minute tune ups and replacing a bad drum the day before the show. Great time at JJ but unfortunately none of us won the bus, a lucky couple from Spingerville, AZ had the winning ticket.

...and what a great time that visit with Roy was for both Shawn and I! On Thursday Roy took us out on an incredible AZ wilderness scenic tour in Velma (man! than steep canyon decent was AWESOME!!!) and to some beautiful back-country lakes, ate Mexican chow. We got to eat "In 'n Out" Burgers, adjust valves and tune up old Buses, fix that bad drum on the "raffle Bus", meet and hang out with some great ABC buddies, and then each of us got to drive a Bus through all that beautiful scenery up to Jerome. Then we all experienced the party that is... the "Jerome Jamboree #24"! Ted, we really wish you could have been there with us! We camped together and stayed very "hydrated" all weekend, Roy cooked us up some "great grub", and then after loosing my "digs" to the actual raffle winner we all piled into Roy's awesome Deluxe for another backroads scenic drive back to the Jonas home in Mesa, AZ. Shawn flew home on Monday morning, and I stayed on thru Wednesday (I washed up Roy's awesome Deluxe, then toured the incredible Arizona Commemorative Air Force museum, and of course ate more "In 'n Out"ers), then I flew straight from Phoenix to San Francisco to spend the next weekend driving an old 36K mile '56 Oval 300 plus miles to/from the Solvang Vintage VW weekend.

I wrote up the whole JJ adventure which can be seen in my "Transporter Talk" column in an upcoming issue of Hot VWs magazine. Check it out soon!

Thanks again for the wonderful hospitality Roy!

Shawn, get your green Camper fixed and back on the road so we can drive out to the JJ#25 in September of 2015!

I think it's about time for an update on the adventures of this beautiful old Deluxe in semi-retirement in Arizona... I needs me a fix!

Oh, Roy, you can talk about yourselves and your adventures too!

Bill
