Finally got the '78 riviera up and running and have been daily driving it and dialing it in the last couple of weeks.
Still need to pull the windows and take care of the rust under them, mostly surface I hope. Hava all new rubbers and front glass to go in.

Got the donor torsion that Ted so kindly let me have, all welded in. Also used a little creativity and go the 23 in the garage.

Hi all,

Yesterday (Monday), with such nice warm and clear weather, I decided to take "Martha", my unrestored June of 1955 Deluxe Sunroof Beetle out for a little road trip in the country out west of St. Charles, Missouri. Kathryn and I drove the old Oval west from St. Charles on I-70 to Jonesburg, MO, took backroads south/west to the German community of Herman, MO, then headed east on 100 to New Haven and Washington, MO where we had bar-b-que lunch at Sugarfire BBQ joint. Then we crossed the Missouri River and cruised on the extremely scenic, windy and hilly Hwy 94 all the way back to St. Charles and home, putting about 140 miles on the old girls odometer (total now just about 70K). "Martha" purred like a kitten! Kathryn was pretty happy too. I beamed an ear-to-ear smile the whole way! "Martha" got a nice wash and dry after her Spring adventure too!

In that top photo, the bank of the Missouri River is about 40 feet from the Oval, just over that grassy dike in the immediate background.

Spent the last few months cleaning and refreshing my engine and trans. Trans shifts good but was leaking a lot, mostly from the nose cone and boots but also one RGB and the other RGB had sloppy bearings. Jared cleaned the trans up for me and rebuilt the boxes with new bearings and put on some one piece boots and nose cone bushing and seal stuff. Looks much better, engine got a few upgrades too and some resealing, I'll post pics of it later. Got it all back together this past Saturday. Also turned the rear springplates from 20deg to 21.5 and put on new bushings, due to the rear always being a little saggy. I think I'm pretty happy with the height now, looks pretty level. Has the rear bumper on now, should be about right with passengers and camping gear. Ready for more adventures.

nicely done! I love a stock-height bus, ready for action!
Who did your trans? and how did you handle shipping?
Mine is going to need a total rebuild stub-to-stub and I have no idea where to start.. Rancho maybe?
The bad part is that the backs of my reduction boxes where they bolt to the spring plates are drilled out and heli-coiled with US-fasteners. Need new ones or maybe they need to be filled in and re-drilled completely? dunno what to do.

Jared (jb_vw_nut on here) did the trans, I ordered the bearings and axle boots from Buhaus in Tulsa. Figured he's done more trans work than me and has a little more free time. No shipping, he picked it up after we did the Rally Race weekend in March, me and the girls went down and picked it up in April. Kevin recently got a center section shipped from Rancho don't think shipping was too bad.

In my ongoing project 71 Westy, I recently aquired a license plate frame from my brother Mark. It is a John Riddick VW/Porsche chrome frame. My bus came into the US at Texas. It then was shipped off to Georgia and sold. It then got traded in at Riddick so it could have possibly wore the frame once before in its life. Then there is the ongoing parts purchases that usually end with me taking back the incorrect part and trading for correct. At least there is someone still in Columbia that can even play the game. Tom's Imports. Seriously folks, a treasure trove of VW parts. Waiting for my YOM plates to go to legal status from DMV Jeff city. Been a long wait, but I believe it to be worthy.

I have just been collecting parts for the '59 trailer bus..to make it a whole bus again. Lacking some spring plates for the rear. Currently rebuilding an early bay beam so she can roll again.
& Stripping house paint off of it to reveal the mango and seagull grey
